Google Reviews Disappeared Overnight? What Chicago Businesses Should (and Shouldn't) Do
Woke up to fewer reviews, or a 0.0 rating? Don't touch your profile yet. Here's what's happening and what Chicago owners should do.

You open your profile before the lunch rush and something's wrong. Yesterday you had a solid rating built over years of regulars in Lakeview. This morning the count is lower. Maybe a lot lower. Maybe it says 0.0.
Your first instinct is to fix it. Edit the profile, message Google, reply to the DM that showed up promising to "restore your reviews in 48 hours."
Don't. Not yet.
Google reviews disappeared: you're not the only one
This has been a long-running problem, and it's been louder this year. Owners on the Google Business Profile subreddit have posted about losing more than a thousand reviews overnight, about well over a hundred genuine reviews vanishing, and about reviews disappearing one at a time over weeks. Google said in July that it was investigating missing reviews. Since around late September, Google has also started emailing owners when a spike of suspected spam reviews triggers removals and a temporary pause on new reviews.
So if it happened to you, it's probably not personal, and it's probably not a penalty for something you did this week. But it still matters, and here's why.
Why it hurts more in franchise-heavy neighborhoods
The map pack shows three businesses. Reviews are a big part of how Google decides which three, because they feed prominence.
On a strip of Clark Street in Lakeview, or along Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park, or anywhere in the Loop at lunch, you're not just up against other independents. You're up against chain locations with years of reviews and corporate teams managing every profile. When an independent loses a big chunk of reviews overnight, there's no cushion. You can drop out of the top three on the blocks around your own front door, and every "near me" search that would have found you finds the franchise instead.
That's the real cost. Not the number. The calls.
Why did my Google reviews disappear?
There are a handful of common causes:
- Spam filtering. Google's automated systems remove reviews they think are fake or incentivized. Sometimes they catch real reviews in the net, especially a batch that arrived close together.
- A review spike or attack. If your profile gets hit with a wave of suspicious reviews, Google may remove reviews and pause new ones. That's the case where you may get an email.
- Policy issues. Reviews from employees, from people you offered a discount to, or collected through gated "only happy customers" funnels can be removed.
- Profile changes. Big edits like a name, address, or category change can trigger re-verification and temporarily hide reviews.
- Display bugs. Sometimes reviews are still there but aren't displaying. Those cases have taken weeks to resolve for some owners.
- Reviewer accounts. If a reviewer deletes their account or Google suspends it, their reviews go with it.
You usually can't tell which one it is from the outside on day one. That's exactly why the next steps matter.
What to do in the first 48 hours
- Don't edit your profile. Changing your name, address, category, or hours mid-issue can add a verification problem on top of the review problem.
- Document everything. Screenshot your review count and rating, note the date, and save any email from Google.
- Check your email and your profile notifications. If Google sent a spam-spike notice, it tells you what happened.
- Post in the Google Business Profile Help Community or contact support through your profile. Include your screenshots and dates.
- Keep replying to the reviews you still have. Normal activity is a good signal.
- Ignore anyone who DMs you offering to restore reviews. Nobody outside Google can restore them. Paying someone who claims they can is how owners lose money and sometimes their profile.
What not to do
Don't launch a sudden "everyone please leave us a review" blast. A burst of new reviews right after a removal looks exactly like the pattern spam filters are built to catch. Don't buy reviews. Don't ask employees or family to post. Don't create a second profile.
Slow and steady asking, built into how you close every job or every visit, is what holds up.
How Google Business Profile management services protect you
This is the unglamorous side of what good google business profile management services actually do. It's not just optimizing categories once. It's watching the profile, catching changes early, documenting a baseline, and having a clean review process so there's nothing for a filter to object to.
When we run Google Business Profile management for a client, the review process is part of the setup: how customers are asked, when, and how every review gets a reply. It's the same thinking behind the 7-point GBP audit we run on every Lake County client, and it's how we approach Google Business Profile optimization in Chicago, where the competition for those three map spots is thicker.
Good google maps seo services don't panic when reviews move. They already have the before-and-after documented, and they know what to leave alone.
Rebuilding after the reviews come back (or don't)
Some owners get their reviews back in days. Some wait weeks. Some lose them for good. Either way, the recovery plan is the same:
- Get your asking process steady again: every customer, same way, no incentives.
- Keep posting updates and photos so the profile stays active.
- Make sure your website clearly supports what the profile says about you. Strong local SEO in Chicago doesn't lean on reviews alone.
Then measure where you actually stand on the map, block by block, instead of guessing from the review count.
Check where you stand
Run our free GBP audit to see how your profile ranks across your area right now. If your reviews just disappeared, it gives you a baseline to measure the recovery against.
Your reviews are your reputation, but they're also a ranking signal. Protect both.
FAQ
Why did my Google reviews disappear?
Usually spam filtering, a review spike that triggered removals, policy issues, big profile edits, a display bug, or deleted reviewer accounts. Google has confirmed investigating missing reviews this year.
Google reviews disappeared overnight. Will they come back?
Sometimes. Display bugs and mistaken filtering are often resolved, though some owners have waited weeks. Reviews removed for policy reasons usually don't come back.
Should I edit my profile if my reviews disappeared?
No. Avoid big changes to name, address, category, or hours until the issue is resolved, so you don't trigger a separate verification problem.
Can someone restore my Google reviews for a fee?
No. Only Google can restore reviews. Treat DMs promising restoration as a scam.
Do missing reviews hurt my Google Maps ranking?
They can. Reviews feed prominence, so losing many can push you out of the map pack, especially in neighborhoods packed with franchise locations.
