Contractors: Fix Your Google Presence in October, Not January
Winter work gets researched in fall, and profile changes take weeks to register. Contractors who wait for the January slowdown miss the season it was meant to win.
Contractors: Fix Your Google Presence in October, Not January
Every January, contractors do the same thing: the phone slows down, there's finally time to think about marketing, and the Google Business Profile gets its annual look. It feels responsible. It's actually three months late.
The January mistake
Profile changes don't pay off the day you make them. Categories take time to re-rank. New reviews accumulate slowly. Google reads sustained activity, not a single burst of January housekeeping. A profile fixed in January starts performing in late winter — after the winter work was already awarded to whoever was visible in November. You optimized for a season that's over.
Winter jobs are searched for in fall
Homeowners don't wait for the problem to plan the project. The basement remodel that starts in January gets researched in October. Storm damage, winter roof issues, and emergency repairs get searched the day they happen — and those searches go to profiles that were already strong when the snow hit. The fall is when winter's customers are looking. That's the window your profile has to be right.
What to update before the season turns
Services: add the winter-relevant ones explicitly — snow-load repairs, ice dam work, interior remodels, whatever your winter book actually looks like. Photos: your camera roll is full of finished summer projects; a batch of them uploaded now signals an active, working business. Posts: start talking about winter services in October so the relevance is established before demand arrives, not after. And check the basics you haven't looked at since spring — hours, phone, service area.
Your summer reviews are still warm
The clients from your busy season are the easiest reviews you'll ever collect — the deck is built, the addition is done, the goodwill is fresh. Every month you wait, the ask gets more awkward and the response rate drops. A fall review push does double duty: it converts summer's work into prominence right before the season when you'll need it most.
The gap widens in the slow months
Here's the competitive logic: in winter there are fewer searches, so the map pack's top three take an even larger share of what demand exists. Being #5 in July still gets you calls. Being #5 in January gets you nothing. The businesses that hold the map through winter are the ones that did the work in fall — which is also when most of your competitors are too busy finishing the season to touch their profiles. October is the cheapest month all year to gain ground.
October is the deadline
