Same service, two names

GBP vs. GMB — What Changed and What Didn't

Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in November 2021. Nothing about the product changed — only the name. The listing still controls whether you appear in Google Maps and in the local Map Pack, and it is still the single highest-leverage local ranking asset most small businesses own.

The old name never went away in practice. Business owners, agencies, and most of the internet still say GMB. So GMB optimization, GMB optimization services, Google My Business optimization, and Google Business Profile optimization all describe exactly the same work. If you searched for a GMB optimization service and landed here, this is that service.

One practical consequence of the rename: the standalone Google My Business app was retired, and profile management moved into Google Search and Maps directly. If you last touched your listing through the old app, it has almost certainly drifted — hours, categories, and service areas are the fields that go stale first.

By industry

GBP Optimization Is Not the Same Job in Every Trade

The categories, attributes, and photo strategy that rank a plumber will not rank a restaurant. Here is what changes.

Google Business Profile for Contractors

Contractors compete on proximity and trust, and both are decided inside your Business Profile before anyone reaches your website. Google Business Profile optimization for contractors turns on one thing a storefront never has to solve: a general contractor working a 40-mile radius needs the service area, primary category, and photo history doing the ranking work instead of a fixed address.

  • Service-area configuration for crews that travel rather than a single storefront address
  • Primary category chosen against what actually ranks — "General Contractor" and "Home Builder" pull different results
  • Project photos organized by job type, with the completion dates Google weighs for freshness
  • License and insurance attributes filled in, which several trades categories surface directly in the listing
  • Review responses that name the work and the town without keyword-stuffing

Google Business Profile for Plumbers

Plumbing is an emergency category. Most searches happen on a phone, from the Map Pack, with no intention of reading a website — which makes Google Business Profile optimization for plumbers a question of hours, call buttons, and response signals more than anything else.

  • 24-hour and emergency-service attributes configured so you surface on after-hours searches
  • Services listed individually — water heater, drain cleaning, repipe, sump pump — instead of one generic "plumbing" entry
  • Booking and call-tracking links wired into the profile so the calls are attributable
  • Q&A seeded with the questions that actually precede an emergency call
  • Review velocity monitoring, since plumbing rankings move fast on recent review activity

Google Business Profile for Restaurants

Restaurants live and die by the profile. Menus, photos, hours, and reservation links are the listing — most customers decide inside Google and never visit your site at all. Google Business Profile optimization for restaurants also has to defend the listing, because anyone can suggest an edit to your hours and it is the category where that happens most.

  • Menu upload and structured dish listings, including the menu URL Google reads directly
  • Photo strategy across food, interior, and exterior — the three sets Google surfaces separately
  • Reservation and ordering links connected to the platforms you already use
  • Holiday and special hours maintained ahead of time, not corrected after a bad review
  • Monitoring for unauthorized edits, which hit restaurant listings more than any other category

Why owner-operated

Why Owner-Operated Beats an Agency Retainer

Most GBP optimization is sold by agencies large enough to need a layer between you and the work. That layer is where the cost and the delay come from — an account manager who takes your request, a ticket that queues it, and a specialist who eventually does a job that took twenty minutes.

Spark N Code is one person doing the work. That is a real constraint, and it is the honest trade: we take fewer clients than an agency could. What you get for it is that nothing is translated, batched, or delegated on the way to your listing.

01

You talk to the person doing the work

Not an account manager relaying your request to someone else. The person who audits your profile is the person who configures it, and the person who picks up the phone.

02

Changes ship the same day

A wrong phone number or a holiday-hours fix is a five-minute job. It should not sit in a ticket queue behind a hundred other accounts waiting on a weekly batch.

03

Flat rate, no contract, no upsell path

$250 to set it up, $150/month if you want it managed. Cancel the monthly anytime. There is no tier above this one designed to make this one feel inadequate.

04

You keep everything

The profile, the listings, and the directory logins are yours. If you stop working with us, nothing gets switched off and nothing is held hostage.

Common questions

Google Business Profile Optimization — Frequently Asked Questions

What the service covers, what it costs, and what it does not do.

What is Google Business Profile optimization?

Google Business Profile optimization is the process of fully completing and strategically configuring your GBP listing so Google ranks you higher in local search and Google Maps. It covers selecting the right primary and secondary categories, writing a keyword-rich business description, setting service areas, configuring hours and attributes, adding products and services, uploading photos, publishing Google Posts, seeding the Q&A section, and building consistent citations across 50+ directories. Most profiles sit at 40–60% complete out of the box, and that gap is what keeps businesses out of the Map Pack.

Is GMB optimization the same as Google Business Profile optimization?

Yes — they are the same service under two names. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in November 2021, but the old name stuck in everyday use, so GMB optimization, GMB optimization services, Google My Business optimization, and Google Business Profile optimization all describe identical work: configuring and maintaining the listing that decides whether you appear in Google Maps and the local Map Pack. If you came here searching for a GMB optimization service, you are in the right place.

How does Google Business Profile work for local SEO?

Your listing is the single strongest local ranking asset most small businesses control. Google Business Profile for local SEO works on different inputs than traditional organic SEO: instead of domain authority and backlinks, position comes from profile completeness, category accuracy, NAP citation consistency, review velocity, and the searcher's proximity to you. That difference is why a business with a modest website can outrank a far larger competitor in the Map Pack while losing to it in the organic results below. For most local businesses, optimizing the profile is the fastest visibility gain available.

What does a Google Business Profile optimization service include?

Our service includes a full profile audit, category and description optimization, service area configuration, photo organization, Google Posts setup, Q&A seeding, citation building across 50+ directories, and NAP consistency correction — all for a flat $250 one-time fee. The $150/month management plan adds weekly Google Posts, review monitoring and responses, monthly photo updates, profile-edit monitoring, and performance reporting. There is no contract on either.

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes — creating and claiming a Google Business Profile is completely free, and Google does not charge to list your business on Maps or in local search. What costs money is doing it well. A free profile you claimed and never configured is the single most common reason a business is invisible in the Map Pack while its competitors are not. Our flat-rate setup maximizes every element Google actually uses to rank you.

How do you optimize a Google Business Profile?

It is a checklist, not a trick: claim and verify the profile, select the most accurate primary category and every relevant secondary category, write a 750-character keyword-optimized description, configure service area and hours and attributes, add all products and services with descriptions, upload high-quality photos and a cover image, publish a first Google Post, seed the Q&A section with real customer questions, then build consistent NAP citations across 50+ directories. Ongoing management — review responses, weekly posts, photo updates — is what holds the ranking once you have it.

Why does NAP consistency matter for local rankings?

NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. Google cross-references your business information across every directory, social profile, and citation on the web. If your address reads "1234 Main St" on your website, "1234 Main Street" on Yelp, and "1234 Main St Suite A" on a directory, Google sees inconsistency and lowers its confidence in your data — which suppresses your ranking. We audit and correct NAP data across 50+ directories during setup so every listing matches exactly.

How long does GBP optimization take to work?

Most businesses see measurable increases in profile views, search impressions, and direction requests within 30–60 days of a full optimization. Citation building takes 4–8 weeks to propagate across directories and register with Google. Review signals compound over time, so businesses actively collecting and responding to reviews typically see ranking movement within 60–90 days. Unlike paid ads, a Map Pack position keeps delivering visibility after you stop spending.

Do I still need this if I already have a website?

Yes, and they do different jobs. Your Business Profile often appears above your website in local results, especially on mobile and in Maps, and it captures the direct actions — calls, directions, messages — that a website cannot. A strong site builds authority and captures organic traffic; an optimized profile captures Map Pack visibility. Businesses that do only one of the two leave the other channel to a competitor.

Can you fix a suspended or duplicate Business Profile?

Usually, yes. Suspensions most often trace to a category or address mismatch, a service-area setup that conflicts with a physical location, or edits that tripped Google's automated review. Duplicates typically come from a listing that was auto-generated before you claimed yours. Both are fixable, but they are diagnosed case by case — the free audit tells you which situation you are in before you pay for anything.

Who actually does the work?

Izaac does. Spark N Code is owner-operated, so the person auditing your profile is the person configuring it and the person who answers when you call. There is no account manager relaying your request to someone else, and no ticket queue between you and a change to your listing.
